Introduction

Department of Forensic Medicine was incorporated in Government Medical College, Akola in 2002 with the aim of providing quality education to medical students during their 2nd MBBS course.

Various sections of the Department:
Mortuary:- Equipped with cold storage (12 bodies cabinet) for preservation of death bodies. Conduction of post-mortem examination to know cause of death.
Museum:- Equipped with Various specimen of human organs, foetus, toxic plants and animals, Organic / inorganic poisons with description.
Photographic section :- Equipped with various photographs of injuries, sexual assault and post-mortem changes.
Weapon section : Equipped with various weapons.
Departmental Library:- Equipped with various books and journals of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

Mission
    As a teaching institute we are committed to train undergraduate/ Post graduate student , Medical officer and resident doctors to handle Medico-legal cases.
  • i) To identify the basic Medico-legal aspects of hospital and general practice.
  • ii)To define the Medico-Legal responsibilities of a general physician while rendering community service either in a rural primary health centre or an urban health centre.
  • iii) To appreciate the physician's responsibilities in criminal matters and respect for the codes of Medical ethics.
  • Iv) To diagnose, Manage and identify legal aspect of common acute and chronic poisoning.
  • v) To describe the Medico-legal aspects and findings of post-mortem examination in cases of death due to common unnatural conditions and poisonings.
  • vi) To detect occupational and environmental poisonings, prevention and epidemiology of common poisonings and their legal aspects particularly pertaining to Workmen's Compensation Act.
  • vii) To describe the general Principles of analytical Toxicology.
Vision
The broad vision of the department is the teaching and training of students in basic medico-legal work.
  1. I) To make observations and logical inferences in order to initiate enquiries in criminal matters and Medico-legal problems.
    • a. To be able to carry on proper Medico-legal examination and documentation / Reporting of injury and Age.
    • b. To be able to conduct examination for sexual offences and intoxication.
    • c. To be able to preserve relevant ancillary materials for medico-legal examination.
    • d. To be able to identify important post-mortem findings in common unnatural deaths.
  2. ii) To Diagnose and treat common emergencies in poisoning and chronic toxicity.
  3. iii) To make observations and interpret findings and post-mortem examination.
  4. iv) To observe the principles of medical ethics in the practice of his profession.
  5. v) To carry out PM examination 24x7 hrs.
  6. vi) To achieve standard of work as a regional centre.
Functions & objectives.
  • i) To form opinion regarding medico-legal cases (Ante-mortem and post-mortem cases)
  • ii) Teaching of undergraduate and PG Student.
  • iii) To conduct workshop for police personnel.
  • iv) To develop best research environment and excellent students by providing evidence based teaching facilities.
